DELIBERATIVE FACILITATION
In both the social policy and commercial spheres, research is being asked increasingly to address issues of democratic engagement and consumer empowerment. Deliberative events are required to create an open and non-directive forum in which participants are assisted to reach conclusions about complex situations.
The essence of our approach is permissive. We ensure that participants are equipped with the means and information to address complex and technical issues, and also with the confidence and the wherewithal to explore and develop their own responses.
An example of our deliberative work in the public domain can be seen in the national debate on the possible commercialisation of GM crops that took place in 2003 (GM Nation? The Public Debate). Corr Willbourn's work ensured that the issues were framed for the public by the public, and hence the debate evoked authentic engagement and deliberation around the complex scientific, social, ethical and political issues.
